Armin van Buuren was born in 1976 in Leiden. This DJ and producer is by now considered one of the best Dutch export products. His Armin Only Show for New Year 2008-2009 in the Los Angeles Sports Arena attracted an audience of 35.000 dancelovers. (...).  No wonder he was elected Best DJ of the World of both 2007 and 2008 by the British DJ Magazine. Edison, Pop Price, Best Trance Artist just to name a few other prices he has won. The NNO bows deep for this brilliant achievement with a unique Tribute, complete with a spectacular lightshow. Van Buuren was awarded a Golden Harp this March 2010 for "his extraordinary gift of reaching and moving of people by his music."

Veni, veni Emmanuel is een spektakelstuk dat James MacMillan schreef voor de slagwerkster Evelyn Glennie en orkest. Bezoekers zullen ogen en oren tekort komen tijdens dit familieconcert."
If ever an animal fascinated composers, it has been the bird. And the eternal question of whether it also strives for beauty in its singing. From early on, mankind has believed that art - including music - has imitated nature. The Day- and Nightingale of Theo Loevendie is about the difference between real birdsongs and imitation, a wonderful tale, with a text by writer Kees van Kooten.
Veni, veni, Emmanuel is a spectacular score which James macMillan wrote for percussionist Evelyn Glennie and orchestra. The audience will need all eyes and ears during this family concert.

Hearing Le Sacre du Printemps of Igor Stravinsky live is an overwhelming experience. It should be on the list of things you should have done at least once in your lifetime. The composition, written in 1913, is the highlight of symphonic music of the last century. Like Beethoven's ninth syphony became the ultimate standard for the romantic period, le Sacre has become a shining example for a new generation of composers.
Le Sacre will be preceded by the wonderful 2nd Violinconcerto of the Russian composer Sergej Prokofjev (1934).

As every concert visitor knows, the first familiarisation with classical music is of great importance. Research has shown that family and school education determine a person's later interest. For that reason, the NNO and the Stichting Albino enable a series of educational concerts each year. This June, a children schoolconcerts tour will be held visiting Drachten, Stadskanaal, Hoogeveen, Emmen, Meppel, Groningen and Leeuwarden.   

"NOOTTOCHT": Een componist heeft al jaren geen muziek meer gemaakt. Hij is verdrietig, omdat hij zijn vrouw verloren heeft. Elke dag staart hij naar haar schilderij. Maar op een dag krijgt hij een uitnodiging voor een grote wedstrijd. De componist besluit dat dit zijn kans is om nog een keer een stuk te maken voor zijn vrouw. Hij werkt en werkt, maar toch klinkt de muziek niet goed. Hij mist de harmonie. Om die te vinden duikt de componist letterlijk het orkest in. Daar maakt hij een reis langs de instrumenten. Met hen gaat hij op zoek naar het geheim van de muziek. Het NNO begeleidt de voorstelling met muziek van onder meer Tsjaikovski, Prokofjev en Stravinsky...

"QUEST FOR NOTES": A composer has not been able to compose for years. He is sad, beause he lost his wife. Every day he looks at a painting of her. But one day, he receives an invitation for a great competition. The composer decides that this is his chance to devote a final composition to his wife. He works hard on it, but the composition does somehow not sound right. It misses harmony. To find that, he literally goes into the orchestra and makes a long journey passing all instruments, trying to find with them the secret of music.
The NNO accompanies this performance with music of e.g. Tsjaikovski, Prokofjev and Stravinsky....

As part of the Gaudeamus week I will conduct the Holland Symfonia Orchestra.
